IMAGINARY BILL
When/Where: 9 p.m., Friday at Neon's
Homebase: Brooklyn, N.Y.
Bio briefing: Formed in 1999 after the members splintered off from a different band. Released a self-titled debut in 2002 and an EP early this year.
Sounds like ... : Addictive, to-the-point Power Pop trio with a heavy Beatles leaning. But unlike most Fab Four fanatics, Imaginary bill adopts their fluid grace via smart, punchy songs with a modern slant. A sober, focused Guided By Voices, perhaps?
Fun fact: The press has compared the band to the likes of XTC, Nirvana, Cast and, oddly enough, The Doors and Better Than Ezra!
Shauna Skye interviews Steve for Screaming MP3, Spring 2003
Imaginary bill is one of my favorite indie bands. I used to play them on the Moon Radio show. Vocalist, Steve, drops me an email now and then. He's a really nice fellow.
Shauna: You already know that I think your band is awesome, but what kind of reviews have you been getting from the critics.
Steve: The critics have been altogether too nice. I think they may be showering us with praise just to lull us into a false sense of security, waiting for a time when they may attempt to fatten us up and eat us.
Shauna: Tell us about the local scene you're part of.
Steve: We kind of create our own scene around us. We've been palling around with Teenage Girls from PA. a lot, as well as the Thompson Gunners, Endgames and Iridesense from LI. As we discover bands we enjoy playing with, we try to set up shows with them.
Shauna: You have a video for "Bottom Feeder." Do you have any behind the scene stories about the making of this video? Also, where is the best place to see it?
Steve:The biggest problem we encountered during production was trying to hire fluffers once they found out we weren't shooting a porn movie. (Those who are aware of the more technical aspects of video and film production can attest to the many snags that can arise during a shoot). Being the pros we are, we decided to shoot it anyway, in a less excited state. It helped having a great director in Lonnie Norvin who would say encouraging things like "aren't you done rolling that yet" and "you're not going to smoke that in here are you?" You can see it off our website.
Shauna: What else has the band been up to?
Steve: We've been the busy bees. We recorded a few songs recently with Chris Pierce (from Doc Hopper) as engineer, but being such prolific bastards, we recorded some even newer stuff with the great Matt Stein. We've always produced our own stuff in the past, but Matt's such a perfect fit that we felt right at ease letting him take the reins with the material.
Shauna: Describe how a typical Imaginary bill song gets written.
Steve: About once a month we'll sneak into the space where Guided by Voices rehearses and steal any sheet music we see lying around. Barring that, what we'll do is kind of spontaneously write, all three of us, a nice bit of music a few times a week. We'll then proceed to record it on an unlabeled tape that gets thrown into a pile of unlabeled tapes. The next part is important so listen up… We leave the tape in the pile untouched for many, many months. This causes the music to ferment. When we feel we've brewed it just enough, we forget about it completely and repeat the process with another song on another unlabeled tape.
Shauna: Who are some of your early musical influences?
Steve: I liked the Beatles since before I knew I existed. I liked a lot of 50's music as a kid like Buddy Holly, and such. Black Sabbath was also pretty cool at the time.
Shauna: Who is your favorite Beatle?
Steve: Musically John, but George never got all silly about Yoko.
Shauna: Do you listen to modern radio, and if so what is your opinion of it? Have any favorite bands?
Steve: In NY, the only radio decent, thinking people listen to is talk radio. If you look at the ratings for mainstream radio, they've determined that more people listen to static than any music oriented rock stations. As far as favorite bands go I dig Radiohead in an unnatural way.
Shauna: Aside from music, what are some of your interests?
Steve: I enjoy reading quite a bit. Other than that I'm drawing a blank, due to the fact that my whole life revolves around music.
Shauna: If Imaginary bill had a motto what would it be?
Steve: "If you don't stop messing with yourself, you'll eventually go blind"
Shauna: Which of your own tunes do you presently like best?
Steve: I'm a song bimbo in that I'll be enamored with a new song for a week.
Then we'll write a new one and I'll like that one best.
Shauna: Do you listen to any underground music? If so, what bands would you recommend to us to check out?
Steve:These days, to me, the translation of underground means "doesn't necessarily suck". I'm not sure if any of these guys are truly underground, but the new Guided by Voices CD is a work of art and depth. Also the new Breeders is simply amazing. I also dig Ween and The Muffs.
Shauna: Anything you'd like to shamelessly plug? If so, the floor is yours.
Steve: New EP coming soon, but be sure to stock up on the first CD (which has been medically proven to prevent cavities, famine, and disease, as well as tainted crops and livestock when purchased in quantities of five or more copies.) You can get these items at imaginarybill.com, which is supposedly a great place to be.
Shauna: Thanks a lot, Steve! I look forward to hearing the new album.
Steve: You're welcome luv. Be aware that the views expressed don't necessarily reflect the views of the other members of Imaginary bill or myself.
